What do you do at Mizuho?
In the alternative investments industry, my role touches upon a wide variety of functions, from pure investment operations, risk management and managerial/business administration to accounting, compliance/legal, and marketing/investor relations. It's a little bit of everything that supports the investment team and works hand-in-hand with the rest of the management team to constantly evolve our product offerings and our operational platform.
What surprised you about Mizuho?
I’ve been surprised by the work-life balance afforded at Mizuho. The benefits, especially the time-off policies, have allowed me to spend a lot more time with my family than I had prior to joining Mizuho.
What’s the first thing you read every day?
I use a newsfeed aggregator called Feedly to provide me with a collection of news tailored to my career and interests. I scan the headlines from financial and personal interest feeds while I’m on the train and dig deeper into the stories that most interest me.
How is Mizuho different from other places you've worked?
Most of my prior career was within the hedge fund industry and within smaller firms. It’s quite a change to work within a larger, global organization. It’s been an adjustment, but the alternative investment group is small enough so it feels like a blend of both worlds.
How have you grown since joining Mizuho?
I’ve learned that change is inevitable, and it’s important to position your business (and yourself) to accommodate change.
What else interests you, outside financial services?
I try to keep up on developments in alternative/clean energy, especially solar and wind.
What do you do for fun?
At the moment, most of my free time is involved in my kids' sports. After spending many years coaching my son’s baseball team, he recently switched to golf, so we spend a lot more time on the golf course now. Otherwise I like to spend time cooking/grilling, homebrewing or mountain biking
